The Life Balance Struggle

I’m sitting in the pediatrician’s office, waiting for the doctor to see my son for one of those fun and interesting kid mysteries–he woke up with a random, swollen eye. But he’s in great spirits, as he always is, just excited to play with the new and different toys in the waiting room. And he’s enjoying giving the stink eye to those parents across the room a little *too* much…

…which serves as a smooth segue into today’s blog post: balancing motherhood and a(nother) job.

Last week, in response to the great blessing of a fruitful business launch (thank you!), I worked 90 hours in 5 days and slept a total of 25 hours in that period. Two nights I nearly collapsed as I got ready for bed in the wee hours of the morning. I don’t share this to impress you; I share this to expose my learning curve. Needless to say, I cut off the orders for this week at a third of what I accepted last week. What an amazing problem to have! Again, thank you!

A big reason that I ended up working 90 hours was because my #1 priority with this business is to keep my life balance in check, i.e. make sure my role as a mother and a wife come before my role as a business owner. Maintaining the balance is a daily struggle, as I’m sure you know in your own life circumstances.

Case in point–I had to put this blog post on hold for two days till I had time again to write. I’m now on my elliptical in the garage while my kids get in some physical exertion out here. Actually, I’m pausing at the moment because one of the twins is grabbing the elliptical. Tiny fingers!

But I’m enjoying the challenge, and you know, the creative outlet is therapeutic. As a wise woman told me, “It sounds like this is healthy for you and your family!” It gives me such joy to hand off edible art that’s absorbed my creativity into its buttercream.

That said, I don’t ever dare predict what the future holds. But for now, this is where I’m supposed to be, and I’m glad!

Happy Mother’s Day to you mothers out there. Here’s to my mom, who sacrificed so much for us kids to maintain that life balance.
